There has been a Laemmle in the movie business since there’s been a movie business. This is the story of a beloved arthouse cinema chain in Los Angeles with an astounding Hollywood legacy. Four generations of the Laemmle family have dedicated themselves to elevating the art of filmmaking, host everything from independent to foreign films, documentaries to blockbusters and filmmakers of all stripes. Filmed over 2 years, Only in Theaters chronicles a family business and their determination to survive. But, in a changing world, this is also a story about the future of cinema and how we gather to tell stories.
Join us in the Scott Room to learn the story of Carl Laemmle, one of the founders of Universal Pictures, and the California arthouse theaters that bear the family's name. After the film, we'll be joined by the documentary's director Raphael Sbarge and Greg Laemmle, one of the current owners of Laemmle Theaters, to discuss the making of the documentary and the exhibition of movies in America today. Light refreshments will be served. Don't miss this fascinating look at a crucial piece of American history and the movie business!
