Shubh Deepavali!

Join us in the Scott Room for an afternoon of food, film, and camaraderie in celebration of Diwali.

We will be screening the film Last Film Show (2021) in Gujarati with English subtitles. Also known as Chhello Show, the film is a Gujarati coming-of-age story following nine-year-old Samay (Bhavin Rabari) from Chalala, a village in Saurashtra, Gujarat, who spends a summer watching films from a shabby theater's projection booth. Delighted by movies and filmmaking, Samay is determined to become a filmmaker himself despite the obstacles along the way. Directed and written by Pan Nalin, an award-winning filmmaker from Gujarat, Last Film Show is a semi-autobiographical love letter to cinema and the stunning vistas of Western India. It was spotlit at the Tribeca Film Festival and received awards at both the Palm Springs International and Mill Valley Film Festivals.

Before and during the film, a delicious assortment of Indian food will be served by local author and chef Rinku Bhattacharya. Ms. Bhattacharya was born in Kolkata, India and currently resides in Westchester. She teaches cooking classes, maintains a popular food blog, and writes for various publications. She is the author of several cookbooks, including The Bengali Five Spice Chronicles. Ms. Bhattacharya will speak briefly on the significance of Diwali as a holiday and how it is celebrated in India and around the world.

May your Diwali be full of fun and light!
