With the new year comes new award winners! The ALA Youth Media Awards were held in January, where the Newbery, Caldecott, Coretta Scott King, and many other book awards were announced.
This year’s Newbery Medal winner is First State of Being by Erin Entrada Kelly. The recipient of the Caldecott Medal is Chooch Helped, illustrated by Rebecca Lee Kunz and written by Andrew L. Rogers. The winner of the Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award is My Daddy Is a Cowboy, illustrated by C.G. Esperanza and written by Stephanie Seales.
We are excited to announce that our very own Children’s Librarian, Sarah Rodriguez, had the honor of serving on the Newbery committee this past year. She was one of 15 distinguished librarians from across the country who selected this year's winner. After reading hundreds of books, analyzing and discussing them with esteemed peers, and traveling to the ALA Youth Media Awards, she was part of the group that announced First State of Being as the recipient of this prestigious award.
