Like many of you I’m sure, I’ve spent some of this time in isolation cleaning out drawers, closets, and bookshelves. Digging through my old things got me thinking about the books I read in late elementary and middle school that made me the reader I am today.
While of course there are some books from a couple decades ago that are no longer available (some for good reason, I’m lookin’ at you Magic Attic Club), there are also books that stand the test of time. Here are just a few of these true classics:
From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs.Basil E. Frankweiler by E.L. Konigsberg
Claudia and her brother Jamie hatch a plan to run away from home to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. As a kid, I couldn’t imagine anything cooler (I still kind of can’t…).
Running Out of Time by Margaret Peterson Haddix
When disease spreads through her small frontier village in 1840s Indiana, Jessie is shocked to learn that the year is actually 1996. If she can make it to the outside world, Jessie might be able to bring back the cure.
The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare
Lonely upon arriving in colonial Connecticut from Barbados, Kit Tyler befriends a woman believed to be a witch.
