Friday, April 28th at 2:00 PM – Register

Chris Merwin is classically trained on the shakuhachi and has been playing for 20 years, his flute is nearly 100 years old.

The shakuhachi is an end blown bamboo flute from Japan. An important traditional instrument in Japan, it is one of the main instruments in the classical ensemble. The most important music played on it is Buddhist meditation music, which is the original music played on this flute by wandering Buddhist monks in the Edo period (1600-1868). These monks were former samurai warriors no longer allowed to carry their swords. The sound of the flute is ethereal and haunting and it is one of the most difficult instruments to play in the world.
